![]() ![]() A number of the ambiguities in the series finally do get addressed. There was one bit, I think my jaw literally dropped I had to back it up and watch it again because I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. If only the entire series had been like this! Talk about a gut-wrenching, kick-you-in-the-butt-and-over-the-edge-of-the-cliff deathrace roller coaster! Very violent, occasionally shockingly so, even by today’s blase standards. I made the happy mistake of watching Be Invoked right after watching the last episode of the series. Lows: occasional jargon floods, a bit predictable in places Highs: music, characters, plot, you name it they slowly become aware that the Ide intends using them for its purposes. But while Solo and Buff both intend using the Ide to their own purposes. Soloists, meanwhile, try to unlock the secrets of the Ideon, the Ide, and Ide energy, and so defend themselves and all Earth’s colonies from the Clanners. The battle between Planet Solo survivors and Buff Clan has raged across the universe, as Buff tries to secure the “Legendary Giant God” Ideon and its companion spaceship. What was the name of the savior in those legends? All in all, definitely a winner, but consider it more a companion piece to the series.įormat: Second movie of double feature release On that note, Ideon pilot Cosmo comments at one point that “a kid” has to be on board the Ideon for it to move. Piper Lou is still annoying, and still important. As noted above, it is great mecha action, but that is all that it is, aside from some standard romantic sub-plots and melodrama on the fringes. Although not as deep as the series, there is some human drama, most notably, the confrontation between Karala and a very upset young lady who lost her family in the Buff assault. ![]() Mecha and ship designs are interesting battles and action scenes stay fresh and avoid becoming formulaic. Incidental music is good, enhancing scenes without calling attention to itself. Animation and art is much cleaner and appealing (although this may be a ripping issue). Technically, this is much better than the series. The movie ends somewhat abruptly as we learn that meteors have been bombarding both the Soloists’ and the Clanners’ home planets – and we also learn that the Ide is not just some blind force, but has some sort of will, and consciousness. Karala is eventually joined by fellow Clanner Lord Gije, who has abandoned his position for the sake of understanding the Ide. As time goes by, Karala essentially defects to the Soloists, and falls in love with Solo commander Jordan Bes. Complicating matters is the accidental inclusion on board the ship of Buff Clan aristocrat Karala, daughter of Supreme Commander Doba. Interwoven with the Ideon itself is the mysterious power source called “Ide”. Their whole existence has become battle after battle, all while trying to decipher the locked mysteries of their flagship, also a “Sixth Civilization” relic, and the Ideon: what Buff Clan calls the “Legendary Giant God”. A Contact is a whirlwind race across galaxies with the beleaguered survivors of Planet Solo under constant assault from Buff Clan. The proto- NGE feel which pervaded the series is entirely absent here. The movie follows almost exclusively the hostilities between Clan and Solo, while Solo’s desperate planet visits are almost completely absent. However, we get almost no backstory on Solo and the Sixth Civilization research. ![]() Buff Clan’s motive for their assault on Solo is explained slightly better. Compared to the series, it lacks psychological and emotional depth, and where the series to me seemed to be drawn-out and sluggish, A Contact is the opposite, racing through the same events in 90 minutes which some 36 half-hour episodes explored. It is difficult to critique A Contact all by itself without comparing it to the series. Lows: pace perhaps too fast, simplistic plot with little depth, seems more like a highlights reel from the series Highs: great characters and mecha, non-stop action, distinctive premise A few of the Soloists seek shelter in what they think are dead artifacts of the long-vanished “Sixth Civilization”, and are startled when the three vehicles spontaneously transform themselves into the giant warrior robot: Ideon! From there, Buff Clan chases the Solo survivors from one galaxy to another, trying to capture the Ideon for themselves. Fearful of their homeworld being discovered, Buff Clan attacks, intending to wipe out the colony. Planet Solo is a bucolic colony world of Earth, until the day scouts from warlike, alien, Buff Clan discover them. If the people seek peace, the Ide shall grant its power of goodness.
